Cedar Hollow Fire Department is not a real fire department. We invented it, along with every name, date and detail on the build, so that a career department can see what the larger build carries without us putting words in a real chief's mouth. Nothing here describes a real organisation.

Cedar Hollow Fire Department: an invented sample build

Cedar Hollow is not a real department. It exists so a career department can see what the larger build carries without us putting words in a real chief's mouth.

A department we invented  ·  Career  ·  Built to WCAG 2.1 AA

What the concept covers

  • Round-the-clock staffing
  • Five divisions on one roster
  • A hiring and testing window
  • Three houses
  • The four things the public calls about

Why this one is built the way it is

Everything on this one is invented on purpose, including the names and the dates. It is the only entry on the board that is not a real department.

Accessibility

This build is made to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, which is the standard the Department of Justice names in its Title II rule for public entities. Contrast is measured rather than judged by eye, every control works from the keyboard, the focus ring is left on, images carry real alt text and motion honours the reduce-motion setting.

Whether that rule actually applies to a given department is a separate question with a real answer, and it is not always yes. Here is how to work out whether it applies to yours.

The build is online and you can look at it right now.

Your department can have a real one

Cedar Hollow is a demonstration. The rest of the board is real departments with real sites already online.
